Breathing Room
mid-month update #2
My tips for writing:
Be smart. Know what you’re talking about and if you don’t, do some research.
Be clear. Use the best word for the scenario; the big, expensive vocabulary isn’t always the right choice.
Be witty. Even in serious situations, a casual joke keeps the reader interested. It’s your writing, have fun with it.
And that’s it, folks. That’s the sum-total of my brain power for the week. I’m maxxed out. Why are my personal writing tips on my mind? I wrote a flash piece yesterday.

Our summer internship starts tomorrow so I need to fix all those spring program due dates and prep the Training Center and the Drive and myself. On that note, I took it easy last week. Well, easier. I took two whole days off (they were nonconsecutive). I’ve been going, going, going nonstop for… since November ‘24 and my “check engine” light has been hosting a rave for months. My body was starting to shut down. Plus side, our community has done so much and I’m honored to have such an incredible team that I trust, who could carry on for a couple days while I remembered how to be a person.
On deck:
Fiction Potluck, themes of “body snatchers”, closes on the 15th. Get strange with it.
WayWords, themes of “time”, closes on the 20th. Never stop singing Hootie & the Blowfish.
Brand new Craft & Chaos is coming your way this Thursday (14th). It’s all about the 5th circle of hell: wrath and sullenness. I mean, “querying limbo”. You’ll love it.
Also, let Karen know you appreciate her by dropping a comment.
Also this week, we’re hosting a random Writer’s Games Event, just for funsies. We’ll start and end at the usual time (midnight, UTC, on the cusp of the 16th). With a Just for Fun Event, there’s no registration and you don’t have to submit because we’re not judging these pieces. However, you’re welcome—encouraged—to share in the #feedback channel of our Discord after it’s over. As I’m writing this post, there are still a few spaces left if you haven’t registered for this year’s Games yet.
Tales from the Archives, themes of “the archives”, closes in September. What if history wasn’t written by the victors?
In even more fabulous news, welcome to the world, WayWords issue 22: themes of habits! If you’re featured in this issue, I sent contributor copies and links on Saturday.

While I don’t, in this brainless moment of what-was-I-even-saying, know how the rest of May will go, rest assured we’ve got some fun challenges open and killer Events coming up.
